Explanation of each subject's relevance to the unit

Discuss goals, guidelines, and the procedure for the next five weeks

English The "how-to's" of a research paper

goal:

To clearly define a research paper

objective:

Students will know the parts of a research paper.

directions:

  1. supply students with a handout identifying the parts of a research paper.
  2. go over it in class using an overhead projector. Allow for as many questions as possible.

materials:

overhead projector

Social Studies In-class discussion of various energy sources

goal:

To identify what students already know about alternative energy

objective:

  1. Students will learn from each other about alternative energy.
  2. Teacher will eliminate misconceptions about alternative energy.

directions:

  1. The class, as a whole, should make a list of alternative energy sources.
  2. Identify concepts associated with each.
  3. Ensure note taking.

Science Introduction of energy

goal:

To introduce energy sources and how they work.

objective:

Students will understand how energy sources are used

directions:

A basic lecture and note-taking class

Write important words or phrases on board.

Math Velocity and acceleration

goal:

To teach students about energy from a mathematical standpoint.

objective:

Students will understand the relationship of time and distance in relationship to speed.

directions:

  1. Give students the basic formula for speed (distance/time)
  2. Give example of a ball rolling, demonstrate in class
  3. Discuss how velocity, distance, time, and acceleration are all relevant components to energy
  4. Assign five problems involving the use of the formula

goal:

To create an understanding of bibliographies and citations

objective:

Students will learn how to cite newspapers, magazines, books, websites.

directions:

  1. Supply students with a handout demonstrating each.
  2. Go over this worksheet on the overhead projector.
  3. Assign students to create 3 bibliographic references by the end of class.

Group work day

* This is the first week and is probably the students' first exposure to this topic to any great detail. Allow for plenty of question and make ideas, concepts, and goals very clear.

This first week is intensive, which is necessary to get the background information to the students so they can get started on the unit.

Depending on how the groups are divided, "get-to-know-you" activities may be useful. This could be done on Monday to expedite the bonding of the groups.
