Monday

English How to do research- go to the school library

goal:

To point students in the right direction as to how to do research.

objective:

Students will be familiar with how to find resources using the library's system.

directions:

  1. Take students to the school library.
  2. Use the librarian to familiarize students with each section of the library.
  3. Have students do an activity to help them find 3 different types of books.

                   a. tell them to find 3 specific types

                   b. have them turn in the title, the author, the call number of them

Science Class activity involving the Energy Forever? Series

goal:

To give students a starting point for understanding different sources.

objective:

Children will learn through each other about energy sources

directions:

  1. Divide students into groups
  2. Give each group a different book from the series
  3. Allow 10 minutes for note taking
  4. Each group should five a summary of their energy source

Tuesday

All-day trip to a large nearby library

EX: IUPUI Library, Marion County Library, etc.

(bring a lunch)

goal:

To give groups a chance to bond and use the skills they have been taught in class.

objective:

  1. Students will apply knowledge gained about research skills.
  2. Students will collect information and sources.

directions:

  1. Allow students to go through the library to collect materials.
  2. Specify check-in times and locations for each home teacher.

Wednesday

Social Studies Sources of energy today

goal:

To explain to children about the social effects of energy.

objective:

Students will gain an understanding of how energy impacts the US and other countries.

directions:

  1. Basic lecture and note taking class.
  2. Write important words or phrases on board.

Mathematics Excel basics

goal:

To introduce students to spreadsheets and give them a basic understanding of how to use them.

objective:

Students will use a spreadsheet and know how to input data.

directions:

  1. Take students through the basic steps of finding Excel within Microsoft Office.
  2. Talk them through manipulating the spreadsheet, i.e. making columns wider, etc.
  3. Give them a sheet of data comparing different alternative energy sources. (this is flexible, it can be how many sources in a given place, a comparison of places, the amount of power they produce…the idea isn’t so much the data as it is the idea of learning to input data and manipulate the cells as needed.

Thursday

English Class time to go through individual research information

goal:

To give students the opportunity to work on their individual component of the unit. Allow them to sort through the information gathered on Tuesday.

objective:

Students will have a clear idea of what they want to focus on.

Friday

Group work day

At the end of the week, students should have a relatively clear idea of where their papers are going and what aspects of their energy source they are going to pursue.

Their research will have given the opportunity to better understand their energy sources and what areas interested this.

The library trip should also have aided in their understanding of how to do research and to work with their group members.
